Conference: Mark will be speaking on the Germans of Riga during World War One
at the
Academia Baltica conference in Sankelmark
on Friday afternoon, the 27th of April, 2007.
Church and State: Mark will be speaking on the separation of church and
state (or lack thereof) in Germany and the United States at the American Monthly
Luncheon in Stuttgart on March 9, 2007.

Teaching: Soon Mark will no longer be teaching the world civilization
courses at APUS. He has begun developing the new course
HS 320 Russian History
for the winter term.
Conference: Mark will be presenting a paper entitled "Exploring the Baltic in
Russian imperial and world colonial contexts: the example of 19th -century religious
missions in Livonia. at a Washington, D.C.

Conference: Mark will be presenting a paper on the mental maps of ethnic groups
in Riga during the First World War at a conference on Riga and Tartu As Sights Of Memory
in Tartu, Estonia in June.
New Publications:An article Mark wrote several years ago has now appeared
in print (in German): Bevölkerungs- verschiebungen in Riga während des Ersten
Welt- und Bürgerkrieges 1914-1919 in: Wittram, Heinrich (Hg.): Der ethnische
Wandel im Baltikum zwischen 1850-1950. Lüneburg, 2005, 53-80.
Mark's other recent article, on the Russian Orthodox Church in Latvia
from the 1840s through World War One, has been published in Religion, Ethnie, Nation und
die Aushandlung von Identität(en) edited by Istvan Keul.
Baltic History: On the evenings of 22 and 29 April, Mark will lecture on the histories of the Baltic states at
the Gemeindehaus of the Catholic congregation in Leidfelden, Germany. The congregation
is planning a 10-day trip to the Baltic.
Banjo news: On the 9th of April, Mark will play his banjo at the baptism of
Johann Reese Kiegelmann in Immenhausen. The following weekend, Mark will
participate in
the Banjoree
in Hagen.

On the Wednesday evenings of 12, 19 and 26 January, 2005, Mark is
presenting a short course (in German) on the history and currency of the
question of "Amerika als Imperium" (American Empire) in Pfullingen,
Germany. The short lectures and discussions are sponsored by the
Volkshochschule in cooperation with the Landeszentrale für politische
Bildung. Details will be available starting on September 8th at

"Gesellschaft und Politik der USA" (Society and Politics in the USA) will be
another course in German Mark is offering at the vhs Pfullingen in January. Details

Starting in September, Mark is teaching history on-line for the American
Military University (American Public University System). His first courses
will be "Russian Military History", "The Spanish Civil War" and "World
Civilization since 1650".
From the 7th to the 10th of October, 2004, Mark is attending the annual
conference of the Nordost Institut in Lüneburg as an interpreter and
participant. The topic of the conference will be "Revolutionen in
Nordosteuropa".
On June 16th, the EUCOM Harmonizers are singing at the annual Heroes
Luncheon of the Association of the United States Army on Patch Barracks in
Stuttgart.
From April to July 2004 Mark is teaching Western Civilization to 1600
on-line for the University of Maryland.
On Tuesday, July 13th, Mark will speak at aconference on "Metropolitan
Catastrophes" sponsored by the Centre for Metropolitan History and held at
the Institute of Historical Research in London. His paper will be on
"Re-mapping Riga: Sudden regime change during war and revolution".
