The first time I taught the course "Problems of World Politics", I required
the students to find links to international organizations and other useful webpages for
this class. They put together the following list, to which I have added
a few of my favourites.
United Nations
Research Guide
This website is designed for people researching information of UN related
topics. It covers reports, resolutions, meeting records, sales
publications, and press releases.
International
Monetary Fund
Latest publications of IMF, be careful, some of the publications
have to be purchased. All and all if you don't know a lot about IMF, this is a good
place to start.
World Bank homepage
There are several areas worth exploring, but most importantly
there is a portion devoted to research, such as the policies, working
papers, programs and projects of the world bank.
Oil Producing and Exporting
Countries
A predominantly Middle Eastern organization, though it's members include
Venezuala and Indonesia. This is an important organization considering
the record prices of oil and the importance of the energy market in world politics.
North
American Free Trade Organization. There doesn’t appear to be a
homepage, but this is a good reference with links to information on
NAFTA, another important regional trade organization.
Military Organizations and Alliances, Peacekeeping
NATO
NATO was formed in 1949 to counter the Soviet threat. What is it
for now? Check it out.
Peacekeeping Links
A useful resource for international peacekeeping operations.
There are several links for peace keeping missions and organizations.
Cultural, Human Rights and Aid and Development Organizations
UNESCO
This a link to the United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural
Organization site which is as close to a bird’s eye view of global
affairs as it gets. You can find just about any topic of international
interest here.
Doctors Without Borders
Known worldwide under the French name, Medecin Sans Frontieres,
they provide health care all over the world and report on human rights
concerns.
Amnesty International
This is probably the most widely known human rights watch group.
World Health Organization
The World Health Organization is the United Nations specialized
agency for health. It was established on 7 April 1948. WHO's objective,
as set out in its Constitution, is the attainment by all peoples of the
highest possible level of health.
World Vision
World Vision is a Christian relief and development organization
dedicated to helping children and their communities worldwide reach
their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty.
Humanitarian
Agency of the United Methodist Church. UMCOR's mission is to alleviate human suffering with open minds
to all religions and open hearts to all people. UMCOR is a humanitarian,
non-proselytising agency of the United Methodist Church.
